Central to the clients' wish list for their new layout was removing the dividing wall all together.  And what a difference that made!  The new seamless space makes conversation while cooking natural and entertaining a whole lot more fun.

How to retain a feeling of dining formality is always a consideration when joining these two spaces in a traditional home.  Here, a double island concept was employed.  With furniture styling and glass display doors, the island that faces seated guests is reminiscent of a china buffet, adding an elegant note.

The former starkness of white on white finishes was replaced with flowing, earthy color. Granite counters, slate backsplash, maple cabinetry and a new fir beam wrap enrich the space.

A special touch is the concealed walk-in pantry entrance. With applied panels on it's face, the door is indistinguishable from the surrounding cabinetry.

Maughan Design provided space planning, color consultation, material selection, and cabinetry (product and installation) for this project.

Before: Working in this 1990's kitchen was a solitary experience before the remodel.  There was no opening in the wall between kitchen and dining, and the only connection between the two rooms was via a short hall.
