KATHIE MAUGHAN – Principal
A native Oregonian, Kathie has always had a knack for visualizing living spaces and began drawing “dream houses” on grid paper in her early teens. By the time she graduated high school, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in interior design. She introduced herself to a local contractor at a lumberyard, who hired the then-17-year-old on faith.
After later working at a furniture store and a wallpaper store, Kathie eventually launched her own company in 1995, learning the ropes through a partnership with a local cabinet supplier.
“I watched from the sidelines for eight or nine years, turning my clients over to other remodelers to do the work,” recounts Kathie. “I would do the design and then introduce them to other remodelers. But, I missed working with my clients once their designs were complete, and I found I had a growing interest in seeing the whole process through.” Already in possession of her contractor’s license, she started running full remodels in 2005, and has never looked back.
“I actually am prouder of the remodel part than I am of the design part. The design part is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it, but it also comes a little easier to me. The remodel part takes so much research to be good at it, and it’s a bigger challenge to put something together that functions well,” she explains. Adds Kathie, “What I enjoy the most is really thinking through the function and space planning, and then how all those materials come together. Paying attention to every detail of a project, so it fulfills what it’s supposed to, functionally and aesthetically.”
Her attention to detail has paid off in the continued growth and success of her business. Not only has Maughan Design & Remodel expanded to a team of ten designers, carpenters, and support staff, but the firm has also won several prestigious industry awards. Maughan Design took home the Best of HOUZZ in Customer Service for both 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016, as well as the 2014 Best of HOUZZ in Design award.
In her free time, Kathie loves working on her flower garden and hitting the streets with the Runner Chick Training Club. She and her husband James also enjoy hiking and travel, and perpetually remodeling their own home. Kathie and James also support several church ministries and are a Marriage Team coach couple, teaching other couples communication techniques to strengthen their marriages.See More Good Day Oregon’s Video with Kathie
CORTNEY AUSTIN – Designer & Project Coordinator
With nearly 15 years of experience as a designer, Cortney brings her creative vision and exceptional organizational skills to both remodels and new construction projects. As a designer and project manager, she is responsible for coordinating schedules, putting together materials specifications, and overseeing contractors and carpenters on site to ensure that all work goes according to plan.
Cortney works closely with clients through every stage of a project, starting with the initial questionnaire, which helps define their needs and wants for their living space. This step is followed by several meetings to review materials, plans and elevations, and all of the products that will be incorporated into the new space, such as sinks, countertops, cabinets, tile, and hardwood flooring.
“We present different items and plans, so they can really visualize the project,” explains Courtney, who says her favorite part of any design and remodel is seeing how the client reacts when the installation is done, and how much they love their new space.
Cortney holds an Associate’s Degree in Interior Design from Scottsdale Community College in Arizona and has been in the industry since 2001. She started working in interior design with a residential/showroom firm while pursuing her degree. She became NCIDQ (National Council of Interior Design Qualification) certified in 2008 and is also an AUTOCAD certified professional.
A native of Arizona, she moved to Portland in 2006 “to get away from the heat” and loves spending time outdoors. When not designing kitchens and bathrooms or on site with a project. Cortney and her husband enjoy hiking, kayaking, and snowshoeing throughout the Pacific Northwest.
